Recently I participated in an beautiful retreat*. During three full days I had the possibility to go deeper and to be more aware and connected with my essence. I felt a little like the doctor that goes visit the doctor. It was really good.
Among different insights and ideas I capture in my journal there was one topic that I found provoking and I would like to share with you. It is about allowing yourself to choose and allowing yourself to embrace what is happening around you.
Have you ever been in a situation where you could interact, clearly, with your thoughts before replying to someone or reacting in a certain way? I am sure you did! It is a amazing feeling.
One of my favourite quotes (Kofi Annan) says that “To live is to choose”. Well, every moment in our life, I would like to stress every moment, offer us at least two possibilities.
The first option is almost automatic, there are so many things happening all the time that it seems that if it is not news headlines we can choose to ignore, don’t pay attention and even avoid to think intentionally about it.
The second option is more subtle. Between what we see and what we think there is a time frame, one millisecond that if it is used properly can amplify our capacity to choose and to choose well.
So, how can we do it better more often and without adding extra stress to our lives?
The capacity to sense and to expand this powerful tool requires two things:
Awareness and Connection.
Instead of being caught living in the future or in the past, you want to be aware that you are here , yeahh, here! Thats were live, in the present moment.
Secondly, you want to make sure that you connect your mind, heart and whatever values or spiritual dimension you might have in your life.
The more you practice this connection the easier it becomes to feel rooted in a permanent natural flow. It is like tuning into a different operating system.
Give it a try and see if you can add that extra millisecond into your decision and thinking process.
This might be one of the most challenging and powerful skills humans will need in the 21st century. Once you see that this possibility is real, you can choose to self-develop your capacities or to ignore them. And thats probably the source of living a free life.
