I have a problem with weed, which is funny because it might not be precisely what you are thinking. Let me explain.

When I moved to the countryside about 16 years ago, we decided to plant beautiful things around the house, and I still believe it was an excellent decision. Today, there is a front row with plenty of rosemary, an alley with big platanus, orchards that sometimes present us with fruits, and many Leyland that keep the winter days always green around us. The environment has changed dramatically for the better, much better.

    But I have a problem!

The problem is that something started to grow slowly over time around those beautiful things that we had planted. At first, I didn’t notice—well, let’s be honest, I did see—but I thought they were growing so slowly that I could always catch and control it. I felt that I could do it tomorrow or next week. Unfortunately, tomorrow became next month, and next month became next year. One day, when I was looking around the house, I noticed that the precious things I care about were dying little by little, and that’s what I want to talk to you about.

According to Wikipedia, a weed is a plant considered undesirable in a particular situation, growing where it conflicts with human preferences, needs, or goals. A weed tends to overgrow or choke out more desirable plants. Ouch!

Think about what you think are the “weeds” growing slowly around you and threatening to choke the very best of yourself.

The real problem is speed. Things that grow slowly tend to occupy a blind spot in the mirror of our lives. Little by little, without much surprise, they become part of the scenery, part of your life, just like it happened around my house. So, what do you think can be the “weed” in your life?

Is it the exercise you know you should do but keep delaying the starting day? Is it the job you keep promising but have yet to pursue? Is it the way you eat, knowing that it is time for a change? Is it the way you don’t protect your rest and sleep? What about those hard conversations you have been delaying making relationships so oddly uncomfortable?

Whatever it is, you know better than anyone else what is growing slowly inside your “garden.”

My takeaway from my problem with weed is that if you truly care about something, you need to care, you need to pay attention, and it is never too late to start. In the beginning, you might need to make an extra effort to gain control over a situation, but it will pay off for months, years, and lives to come.

If you see something growing that doesn’t belong in your future, don’t be lazy. Go there and take it away. Clean it up, leave it exactly the way you want it to be. Don’t let the beautiful garden of your life be surrounded by weeds that sooner or later will kill you. Keep it tight. Care about relationships, care about friendship, and care about yourself. As a consequence, you will care about the world around you.

Summer vacations for many of us are around the corner, stop for a moment and think about it. Please check :

    1. Time spent with family and friends—Do you see time allocated exclusively and regularly in your agenda to be with your loved ones? Is there a particular person you have been delaying or forgetting to spend time with? Make a phone call, visit, or just message to ask if everything is ok.
    2. Time spent with yourself – Is there any moment you allocate to yourself during the week? Do you consciously decide to block time in the agenda to read, step away from your desk, watch the sunrise,  or try your hardest to do nothing?
    3. Finally, the “mother” of many troubles – The Consumption of Information – How do you “feed” your mind? What criteria do you use to choose what to see, read, learn, or listen to?

Now it is time to shut down the computer and say, until next month, in the meantime, I will go outside and continue to get rid of that nasty weed in the “garden”.

    Let’s keep walking :)
