I often struggle with this feeling. In the most extreme situations, the backlog starts pilling up, I become stressed and overwhelmed and what I have to do becomes a terrible monster.
The scarier the monster, the harder it becomes to tackle it and the more it seems to grow out of control – the more I feel I don’t have time.
Of course, as soon as I take the first step to slay the monster, it starts deflating, stops being scary, and eventually, I laugh at the fact that I ever feared it. But don’t get me wrong – it is hard to take that first step, and a friendly, distanced hand usually gives a big help.
For individuals and teams alike, time pressure can be a monster. And in the same way, it is exactly when you feel pressured for time that you should slow down and regain your perspective.
The notion that you need to slow down and maybe ask for help is proof of maturity and competence.
It is under pressure that you find the great leaders, and the combined forces of time and uncertainty we’ve been living in the last couple of years have been pushing everyone to the limit.
In the last month, besides our individual programs, we had the privilege of walking with 3 different teams from 3 different multinational companies.
These teams are fortunate to have leaders that faced with the need to deal with the pressure of time, know that the best use of time is in gaining perspective, aligning objectives and planning to get there in a structured way. These leaders are fortunate to have teams that rise to the occasion and take the first step.
Do you have a time monster to slay? Maybe a Walking Mentorship program can give you the perfect help, but whatever you do, be sure to deal with it.
P.S.* P.S.* The picture on the article’s cover was taken on a very steep climb with one of the teams we walked with recently. What the image cannot show is the incredible support every member was giving to each other, not leaving anyone behind. Remarkable! That is how you slay your dragons, step by step.
