As my Business + Career Mentorship program in Barcelona approached the final day it became mandatory (like always) to make a personal evaluation of the learnings, observations and feelings that transported my soul throughout the week.
Despite the fact that I knew my students prior to the beginning of the program the moment of true is always the same. When we come together face to face and magic can take place. Seems pretty obvious but this is probably one of my biggest discoveries over the years working in education. Let me try to explain.
Knowledge in most spheres is like the wheel, it was already invented, it is a mature technology and is available in all formats, colors and flavors (usually a click away).
Technology has open a universe of possibilities and an easier access to all sources of information, specially since the advent of personal computers and internet. No questions or doubts about that. If you disagree, I don’t think you would be here reading this very same words.
Unfortunately, specially for humans, like you and me, to be on(line) also became ubiquitous and expected (every time and from everyone). I reinforce the word unfortunately, because the level of noise, lack of attention and time to nurture the core of our existence is becoming dramatically affected and the consequences are already in sight. Uncharted waters we never experienced before.
More or less three years ago, after concluding a teaching semester I felt increasingly disconnected with the content of my lectures and as a consequence I knew I was not giving the very best of myself to my students. Something needed to change, and like anything else in life…change as to start inside ourselves.
The need to reconnect with myself, others and nature around, led the way to “pivot” the core content of my classes.
After that I start focusing on how individuals can discover new ways to self-develop and learn how to learn anything they want or need. And magic happened.
Someone once said that success is not the key to happiness, happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing you will be successful.
I am more and more convinced that Schools, at all levels, need to revise the core reason, the meaning and the purpose of their existence and above all focus on people, happy people :) There is a tremendous field of opportunities waiting to be developed.
I will get back to you on this topic soon:)
