Some weeks ago, not far from home, I was enjoying my morning walk roaming between the vineyards when I suddenly heard a voice coming from behind me.
Where are you going?
Surprised at first and a little worried right after, I was not able to identify where the sound was coming from. Instinctively I looked up to the sun, causing me a total loss of sight and an increase in anxiety. What just did happen to me? Abruptly the voice shout again.
Where are you going? Cant you hear me?
I was forced to stop and pay attention. I turned on my feet and I rotated 360º, and quickly understood the statement was not delivered by a divinity but instead by one of my neighbours.
After a quick chat, I continued my way, but my brain kept on thinking about the question.
Where are you going???
Just before you dive into the “2019 speed train”, which is already rolling in full speed, think for a moment about yourself.
If you don’t know the answer, I think you should get off the train, at least for a while.
Where you are going is more related with your direction rather than your final destination. Your goals and objectives will change (for sure) but every time you propel yourself in a clear direction you become more conscious and responsible for your actions.
Sometimes you will hit the target, but many more you will not. Life is dynamic and your goals move and change into something different, it’s a fact you cannot do much about it.
What you can do, is to incorporate a practice in your life that will always place you closer to the best version of yourself, no matter the new challenges you will have to face.
What active behaviour am I talking about?
Well, despite the incredible benefits of our modern world, that we all should be grateful, we are starting to miss something important. A “technology” we learned to master thousands of years ago and somehow we are starting to forget how to use it.
Thinking! Yes…thinking.
We have currently so many options to make usage of our attention that we often end up absolutely lost. Suddenly we feel like a little kid inside a candy store with unlimited budget.
The problem obviously is not the budget anymore, but instead our incapacity to consume and process more.
We are reaching our limits. Do you have doubts about it?
Frustration, unhappiness and lack of meaningful relations are at a record high. If we don’t manage to go back to thinking mode we are doomed.
Think with me, please.
Everything around you tells you to go faster, buy more, buy cheaper (which means again to buy more), more efficiently and always rushing to the next big thing, whatever that is.
What about if I tell you that there is a wall at the end of this consumerism frenzy?
From the moment you set foot in school until your retirement (then you can rest), it seems that if you don’t gain more and more speed, momentum and growth there is something wrong with you, well…probably there is, specially if you believe in that.
If you cannot see the meaning in your life and in your working environment I strongly advise to slow down. Start with your body and followed by your mind try to answer in an honest way some fundamental questions before hitting the road once again.
Maybe you can start to ask one more time, where are you going?
just in case…
